The fire began at an apartment in Mount Vernon at 243 West 1st St. around 9 a.m., prompting Mount Vernon Fire Department crews to race to the building to contain the blaze.
According to Mount Vernon Director of Communications Timothy Allen, crews quickly entered the apartment where the fire started and searched it for occupants, initially finding no one inside. However, a second search resulted in firefighters discovering a small dog that had died as a result of the blaze.
Although the heavy smoke conditions proved difficult to deal with, crews eventually got the fire under control successfully and contained it to a bed within the unit. No people or firefighters were harmed by the fire, Allen said.
The quick response from firefighters stopped flames from reaching other units or floors in the building, Allen added.
The fire is now under investigation. More details may be released as they become available, Allen said.
